"Generic" Specialist

This is a catch-all category for specializing in most combat fields. If a specialization field is not listed, it may be covered by a specific specialization. The specifics required to achieve a level vary by field, but being certified at a specific level indicates the same general progress towards mastery of that field beyond what most ninja care to know about the field. Having a level of certification indicates official knowledge of one's abilities in a field, so people may have the skill without the certification.

To give an overly simplified idea: Most ninja have 0-49% mastery of a field, even if they might be A-ranked in the field. The ranking covers how much of that field they know and can use, rather than how it works. Basic level will cap out in the 50-70% mastery in the field. Intermediate level will cap out in the 71-90% mastery for the field. Advanced level in a field will be the 91-100% mastery.

Proficiency Levels

Basic

Rank: Chunin
Status: Optional
Skill: None
Other: Ranked C+ or higher in related field

Certification: <specialization field> Adept (ie, Ninjutsu Adept, Poison Adept, etc)
Description: At this level, a ninja begins learning how their field works - how ninjutsu works, for example - and also hone their skills in the field. This allows the ninja to not only get stronger, but to see and feel practical demonstrations regarding what they're learning theory-wise.

Adepts may find ways to be more chakra efficient with some jutsu, and some begin figuring out how to shorten seal sequences to get the same result. Other non-chakra centric fields have similar tweaks begin appearing.

Intermediate

Rank: Chunin
Status: Optional
Skill: Specialist, Basic in same field.
Other: Ranked B- or higher in related field.

Certification: <specialization field> Specialist
Description: At this level, a ninja begins learning the 'why' for their field - why does a jutsu behave this way with this seal and that way with that seal, why does a poison have wildly different effects with a single ingredient change, etc - while still delving further into the 'how.' They also begin minor experimentation with the 'what' - what happens if one

Specialists are the source of many creations that are based in part off existing works. The creation of several B-rank Katon jutsu were by specialists modifying C-rank Katon jutsu to increase power or other effects.

Advanced

Rank: Chunin
Status: Optional
Skill: Specialist, Intermediate in same field
Other: Ranked A or higher in related field.

Certification: <specialization field> Master/Mistress
Description: This level acknowledges mastery in the field. Ninja with this level of specialization understand most of the intricacies and quirks of the field, some times push the frontiers of knowledge in their fields, and often create jutsu or items within their field of expertise. They can also dissect jutsu or items within their expertise after only seeing it a few times.
